Get to know our initiative

We are a group of current and former professionals from the aviation industry, concerned about our industry’s growing contribution to climate change.

Who we are

We are a dedicated group of professionals from the aviation industry, who came together voluntarily to create Call Aviation to Action. We’re fuelled by an intrinsic passion for aviation and a profound desire to see our planet thrive.

Why we do this

We love aviation as well as the planet. Precisely because of that, we are staging an intervention. We call for a deep and just transition on aviation business models and strategies to fit a liveable planet.

How we get moving

Firmly based in science and by uniting aviation professionals that share our concern, we want to encourage our leaders to take the necessary action for aviation to stay within planetary boundaries.

Who we are

Five aviation professionals

United by our personal connection to aviation and deep concern about its climate problem. We call the Netherlands our home, but our work reaches beyond its borders.

Independent and self-driven

We take on this work out of our own passion and beliefs. We work voluntarily.

On a mission to change aviation

Building a community of like-minded aviation professionals, we aim to empower and support one other, and our leaders, to take the bold actions that our industry urgently needs.

Karel Bockstael

Aviation consultant @ Bockstael Transitie | Former VP Sustainability @ KLM

Starting with a background in Aerospace Engineering, I’ve been part of the airline industry for 30+ years, in a variety of senior management and executive roles. I’ve always advocated for ‘conscious flight’, addressing the environmental and societal impact of flying within the airline industry, lastly as VP Sustainability at KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. Since 2022, I’m taking a broader role in the sustainable transformation of the aviation industry as an independent advisor.

Bram Peerlings

Researcher aviation sustainability

Countless days of plane spotting at Schiphol led me to pursue an aerospace degree and a career in this magic industry. Along the way, however, I figured out aviation and its environmental impacts are not ‘just’ technical. Combining my engineering and social science backgrounds, I’m keen on both studying and actively contributing to the fundamental transformation our industry needs and deserves.

Jimena Diamint

Urban Tourism Researcher @ Inholland

After five years working in the aviation industry for Air France KLM my passion for aviation was ignited but also my distress about its harmful environmental impacts. I am profoundly committed to using my time and energy towards transforming the travel and tourism sectors to keep within the planet’s climate goals.

Robert Marx

Founder @ Sustainable Aviation Initiative e. V.

I’m driven by the belief that aviation can be reimagined to serve both people and the planet. With experience at Lufthansa Cargo, Singapore and Boeing in Seattle and Puebla (Mexico), I’ve gained insights into the challenges and opportunities of the industry. Over the years, I’ve overlooked complex projects across industries and continents — always focused on connecting the right people and ideas. Through the Call Aviation to Action I am aiming at turning that momentum into lasting change.

Roxanne van Rijn

Former Program Manager Sustainability @ SkyTeam | Sustainability Strategist @ Elemental Strategy

I started my career at KLM, loving aviation’s ability to connect people worldwide. However, I couldn’t reconcile this passion with the urgent sustainability changes needed for aviation’s future. While short-term improvements are essential, we need a transformative 50-year vision for travel, not just 5-year plans. After various aviation assignments, I help companies integrate and implement sustainability into their corporate strategy at Elemental Strategy.

Frequently asked questions

About our initiative
What is this initiative proposing?

We’re a group of current and former aviation professionals who want to see aviation thrive in a way that makes sense for the future of our planet and the industry itself. We believe aviation is heading towards crisis if decisive action isn’t taken soon. That’s why we’re calling for leadership to set a new course, based on our four key actions by 2025. We collectively need to:

  • Set absolute emission reduction targets in line with carbon budgets.
  • Advocate for and help implement regulation that keeps us within planetary boundaries and really drives innovation.
  • Be realistic on the timeline of what technology can bring.
  • Acknowledge that managing global demand in a fair manner is part of the solution.

Read more on our position and supporting analysis.

What’s the end goal? What does success look like?

Success means a shift in industry leadership—where aviation companies set real carbon budgets, move beyond greenwashing, and take responsibility for their future. It means making demand management a serious business strategy, ensuring regulations drive innovation, and building an industry that can truly thrive within planetary boundaries.

Who’s behind this?

This initiative was founded by a core team of five former and current aviation professionals, and is individually supported by others across the globe.

Are you against aviation?

The opposite: we are driven by a passion for aviation – that’s why we’re doing this. But for aviation to have a future, given its climate impact, it needs to change course. We don’t believe it’s realistic to continue with business as usual. Our goal is to help the industry adapt now, rather than face a crisis later

Why are you not directing this call towards governments?

We also would like to see government involvement in transforming aviation – and believe that involvement is necessary. However, we think the aviation industry itself is best position to start this turnaround. Through this initiative, we aim to show that there is much more within-industry support for that transformation than is publicly known. With that support, we hope to inspire and encourage our industry leaders to tackle this issue head on and start working on the systemic changes required.

How is this different from sustainability initiatives put forward by corporates in the industry?

Many industry initiatives focus on future technologies as the main solution. While we fully support innovation, we also know:

  • Aviation needs to take control of its future instead of relying on external forces to define it.
  • We can’t wait—we need near-term reductions that fit within global carbon budgets.
  • Growth alone isn’t the answer—we must rethink business models, not just efficiency gains.
How does this initiative compare to other calls for change?

Call Aviation to Action is a voluntary initiative led by current and former aviation professionals who care deeply about the future of both aviation and the planet. We are joined by aviation professionals from around the world that share our vision and concerns. What makes us different?

  • We are not focused solely on technology. While innovation matters, we believe transformation is more fundamental and should start with honest conversations about planetary and social boundaries.
  • We are not advocating from the outside. Unlike other groups asking for change in aviation, we are insiders, people with careers in aviation, using our credibility and knowledge to push for change from within. We are not against aviation but for a future where aviation is still relevant and stays within planetary boundaries.
  • We are not fixated on distant targets or asking for net-zero promises. We’re calling for bold leadership and decisive action by 2025, grounded in planetary boundaries and scientific realities.

In short: we are building a professional movement that is honest, independent, and comes out of love for the industry and the planet. We believe aviation can have a future, but only if it changes course now.
